Uh oh! We were changing Carolan’s strings when a tuning peg fell out. So it’s a quick trip to our local guitar tech Colin Staples who has been supporting Nottingham’s players for decades. Steve first met him when Colin worked at the legendary Dave Mann’s music shop back in the nineties, and he’s done some great work since then, including installing a couple of banjo pickups. Colin quickly figures out that a screw as fallen out. But how to replace it? The make of the tuners is not obvious (please leave a comment if you recognise them) and we didn’t record this piece of provenance when Carolan was made (darn!). So, given we need Carolan for a gig next week, the quickest solution is to replace it with an available screw of the right size, even if it is the wrong colour and type. Like the wonky smile we reported back in Post 93 and the various dents and dings we documented in Post 75, it’s now another quirky piece of Carolan’s personality and story. Now back to those strings and some much needed practice …
